Amiri Baraka, Newark Poet
by Levi Asher Thursday, January 9, 2014 09:09 pm

Amiri Baraka, a seminal Beat poet, angry playwright, revolutionary activist and scrappy indie publisher from Newark, New Jersey has died.
I just heard that Janine Pommy Vega, a well-loved latter-day Beat poet, has died. No further info yet, but here's a link to one of her performances (featuring Jason Eisenberg on guitar, video by Laki Vazakas). And here's a note about Janine by her friend Anne Waldman.

A great fierce light has gone out of this world. Janine was 'large eyed and generous,' and will be missed by so many of us.
Thanks for posting this, Levi.

"And she came as a woman
You remember?
Once as a mother, plucking out
the hearstrings, tender
merciless she came
...wearing jewels
the Dog Star and the Hunter
for a belt
Large-eyed and generous she
swooped with beak and talon
mercy dripping from the branches,
You remember?"
